Precautions
Avoid direct trauma to the sciatic nerve.
Location (classical)
On the posterior aspect of the thigh, at the midpoint of the transverse gluteal crease.
How to find it (practical)
In ventral or lateral decubitus, locate the point at the intersection of the lines passing through the infragluteal sulcus and the midline of the posterior femoral region.
Anatomy
Inferior border of the gluteus maximus, origin of the hamstring muscles (biceps femoris and semitendinosus). The sciatic nerve passes deep below this point.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 1.0–2.0 cun.
Etymology
Cheng (承), to hold; Fu (扶), to support. This point lies at the root of the femur, in the center of the infragluteal sulcus. Its function was believed to be supporting the weight of the body.
