Location (classical)
On the nape, 1.3 cun lateral to the posterior midline, directly at the level of GV-17 (which is located in the depression superior to the external occipital protuberance).
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the head erect or with the neck flexed, first locate Nao Hu (GV-17). Locate Yu Zhen (BL-9) 1.3 cun lateral to it.
Anatomy
Occipital muscle. Innervated by the greater occipital nerve. Occipital artery.
Needling
Transverse (subcutaneous) insertion of 0.5–0.8 cun.
Etymology
Yu (玉), jade; Zhen (枕), pillow. The ancient name of the occipital bone was Yu Zhen Gu (jade pillow bone). The point lies over the occipital bone.
