Oblique insertion
Precautions
Caution: avoid excessively deep insertion — risk of injury to the spinal nerves or pneumothorax in the thoracic region. Adjust depth and angle according to the patient's body type.
Location (classical)
A set of 34 points formed by 17 bilateral pairs, located 0.5 to 1 cun lateral to the depressions below the spinous processes from the first thoracic vertebra (T1) to the fifth lumbar (L5). In clinical practice, the analogous points of the cervical region (C1 to C7) are also frequently used as additional Hua Tuo Jia Ji.
How to find it (practical)
Sitting with the head flexed, or in ventral decubitus, locate the points 0.5 cun lateral to and below the spinous process, from the first thoracic vertebra to the fifth lumbar vertebra.
Anatomy
Near the facet joints of the spine. Needling specifically stimulates the corresponding segmental spinal nerves.
Needling
Perpendicular-oblique insertion directed toward the spine, depth of 0.5 to 1 cun. Depending on patient anatomy, more perpendicular or oblique angles (about 45° medially) may facilitate access to the target spinal nerve.
