Precautions
Strict hygiene is mandatory due to proximity to the anus. Deep insertion may perforate the rectum.
Location (classical)
In the perineum, at the midpoint between the tip of the coccyx and the anus.
How to find it (practical)
In the knee-chest position or in prone decubitus, locate the point at the midpoint of the line connecting the tip of the coccyx and the anus.
Anatomy
Anococcygeal ligament, external anal sphincter. Innervated by the coccygeal nerve and the anal branch of the pudendal nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, or oblique insertion directed anteriorly and superiorly, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
The collateral pathway of the Du Mai runs laterally along the vertebral column and ascends to the vertex of the head. Its distribution is long (長 Chang), and its function very strong (強 Qiang).
