Precautions
Deep perpendicular or medial insertion carries substantial risk of pneumothorax. Caution: do not direct the needle medially, as deep perpendicular or oblique insertion can cause pneumothorax.
Location (classical)
On the superolateral aspect of the chest, above the coracoid process of the scapula, in the depression of the infraclavicular fossa (in the center of the deltopectoral triangle), 6 cun lateral to the anterior midline.
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the hand on the hip, locate the point in the center of the inferior triangular depression of the infraclavicular fossa.
Anatomy
Pectoralis major muscle, anterior fibers of the deltoid. Innervated by the supraclavicular nerve and the lateral and medial pectoral nerves.
Needling
Oblique insertion to a maximum depth of 0.8 cun, or transverse-oblique insertion of 0.5 to 1 cun.
Etymology
Yun (雲), cloud; Men (門), gate. Yun refers to Lung Qi. The point sits on the upper part of the chest, like a gateway for Qi of the Lung.
