Precautions
No special precautions; avoid the cephalic vein. Moxibustion is contraindicated according to some classics, as it may provoke counterflow and Qi disorder.
Location (classical)
On the anterolateral aspect of the upper arm, 3 cun below the axillary fold and 6 cun above the cubital crease, in the depression between the lateral border of the biceps brachii and the shaft of the humerus.
How to find it (practical)
1. Seated, raise the arm forward and tilt the head. Locate the point where the tip of the nose touches the anterior aspect of the arm. 2. Seated with the elbow slightly flexed, locate the point 6 cun above the cubital crease.
Anatomy
Biceps brachii and brachialis muscles. Innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve and the radial nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular (vertical) insertion 0.5–1 cun.
Etymology
Tian (天), heaven; Fu (府), mansion. Tian refers to what is above. The point bears this name because Fei (Lung) is the Mansion of bodily Qi, which communicates with celestial Qi through the nose.
