Aerobic Walking for Depression
Depression-specific aerobic protocol with dosing based on meta-analyses (Schuch et al., 2016). Antidepressant effect comparable to medication in mild-to-moderate depression when practiced consistently.
How to perform
- Starting position. Walk at a pace that raises your heart rate to 50–70% of estimated maximum.
- Step 2. Maintain for 30–45 continuous minutes.
- Step 3. Prefer outdoor settings with sun exposure, when possible.
- Return. Maintain consistency — the effects depend more on frequency than on intensity.
When not to perform
- Decompensated cardiovascular disease without medical clearance
- Severe fatigue preventing walking
