A comprehensive bibliometric analysis published in Frontiers in Medicinemapped global trends in acupuncture research through randomized clinical trials (RCTs) between 2010 and 2024. The study quantifies the current scale of the field for the first time — and the numbers are striking: scientific output of acupuncture RCTs reached a peak of 205 studies published in 2022, stabilizing at approximately 160 trials per year. This volume positions acupuncture among the integrative practices with the largest base of clinical evidence of any área of medicine.
GLOBAL OUTPUT OF ACUPUNCTURE RCTS (2010-2024)
Where research comes from — and where it points
China, the United States, and South Korea concentrate more than 60% of global scientific output in acupuncture RCTs. The leading institutions are Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Kyung Hee University (Seoul). Historically dominant topics — musculoskeletal pain, electroacupuncture, and methodologic trials — remain central, but the analysis identifies áreas of accelerated growth that signal the next frontiers of the field: sleep disorders, development of evidence-based clinical guidelines, and diagnostic applications of acupoints.
Priority agenda for the field
The authors identify four priorities for future acupuncture research: systematic identification of conditions where acupuncture demonstrates the greatest potential benefit; exploration of dose-response relationships — number of sessions, frequency, and acupoint selection; improvement of methodologic rigor in RCTs, with standardization of outcomes and follow-up periods; and production of high-quality systematic reviews that enable the incorporation of acupuncture into clinical guidelines of the major medical specialties.
Founded in 1989 by physicians trained at the University of São Paulo (USP) and specialized in China, CEIMEC is a Brazilian national reference in the teaching and practice of medical acupuncture. With more than 3,000 physicians trained over 35 years, it collaborates with HC-FMUSP and is recognized by the Brazilian Medical College of Acupuncture (CMBA/AMB).
