Precautions
Deep perpendicular insertion may puncture the kidney. High risk of pneumothorax.
Location (classical)
1.5 cun lateral to the inferior border of the spinous process of the twelfth thoracic vertebra (T12), at the highest point of the paravertebral musculature.
How to find it (practical)
In ventral or lateral decubitus, locate the point below the spinous process of the twelfth thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cun lateral to the posterior midline.
Anatomy
Skin, subcutaneous tissue, posterior cutaneous branches of the medial branches of the dorsal rami of the thoracic nerve, dorsal branches of the posterior intercostal arteries, latissimus dorsi, erector spinae, and serratus posterior inferior muscles.
Needling
0.5 cun, perpendicularly or in an oblique medial-caudal direction.
Etymology
Wei (胃), Stomach; Shu (俞), point. Place where the Qi of the Wei (Stomach) reaches the back.
