HIGH RISK. Deep perpendicular or superior insertion may perforate the liver or the heart.
Location (classical)
On the anterior midline, 7 cun superior to the umbilicus, just below the xiphoid process.
How to find it (practical)
In supine decubitus, locate the point 7 cun above the center of the umbilicus, or 1 cun above Ju Que (CV-14).
Anatomy
Linea alba, insertion of the rectus abdominis muscle. Innervated by the seventh intercostal nerve.
Needling
Oblique insertion directed inferiorly, 0.4–0.6 cun.
Etymology
Jiu (鳩), dove; Wei (尾), tail. The point is located below the xiphoid process, which is similar to the tail of a dove.
