Location (classical)
On the midaxillary line, in the fourth intercostal space, approximately 3 cun inferior to the apex of the axilla (with the arm raised).
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, locate the point on the midaxillary line, in the fourth intercostal space, 3 cun below the axilla.
Anatomy
Serratus anterior muscle, intercostal muscles. Innervated by the long thoracic nerve and the 4th intercostal nerve.
Needling
Transverse-oblique insertion along the intercostal space, 0.5–0.8 cun.
Etymology
Yuan (渊), deep; Ye (腋), axilla. The point is located in the lower part of the axilla.
