Location (classical)
On the anterior wall of the chest, in the seventh intercostal space, directly below the nipple (4 cun lateral to the anterior midline).
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in dorsal decubitus, locate the point in the seventh intercostal space, on the midclavicular line, 4 cun lateral to the anterior midline.
Anatomy
External oblique and internal intercostal muscles. Innervated by the 7th intercostal nerve.
Needling
Transverse-oblique insertion along the intercostal space, 0.5–0.8 cun.
Etymology
Ri (日), sun; Yue (月), moon. Ri is Yang, and one of the functions of the Dan (Gallbladder) is the clarity to make decisions. The Chinese ideogram corresponding to clarity is composed of two ideograms — the Sun and the Moon.
