Deep insertion may perforate the peritoneal cavity.
Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the abdomen, directly below the free end of the eleventh rib, at the level of the umbilicus.
How to find it (practical)
In lateral decubitus, locate the point at the intersection of the midaxillary line with the horizontal line passing through the umbilical scar, 1.8 cun below Zhang Men (LR-13).
Anatomy
External and internal oblique muscles, transverse abdominis. Innervated by the subcostal nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Dai (带), belt; Mai (脉), vessels. This point is located at the waist, the place through which the Qi of the Dai Mai passes.
