Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the head, within the hairline, at the junction of the upper one-quarter and lower three-quarters of the curved line connecting ST-8 and GB-7.
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the head at rest or in lateral decubitus. Locate the point 1 cun inferior and posterior to Tou Wei (ST-8). At this site, a slight movement is perceived during chewing.
Anatomy
Temporalis muscle. Innervated by the auriculotemporal nerve. Branches of the superficial temporal artery.
Needling
Transverse (subcutaneous) insertion, 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Han (颔), to sway; Yan (厌), to inhibit. The point treats tremors of the head caused by Liver fire.
