Deep insertion may cause significant discomfort.
Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the head, anterior to the ear, in the depression directly above ST-7, on the upper border of the zygomatic arch.
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the head at rest or in lateral decubitus. With the mouth open, locate the point in the preauricular region, in the upper sulcus of the zygomatic arch, immediately above Xia Guan (ST-7).
Anatomy
Temporalis muscle and fascia. Innervated by the zygomaticotemporal nerve and the facial nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Shang (上), upper; Guan (关), boundary or gate. Guan refers to the zygomatic arch. The point is located on the upper margin of the zygomatic arch.
