Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the head, 0.5 cun posterior to GB-8, 2 cun directly above the posterior border of the root of the auricle.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, locate the point 2 cun directly above the posterior margin of the root of the ear, approximately 0.5 cun obliquely and posteriorly to Shuai Gu (GB-8).
Anatomy
Posterior auricular muscle. Innervated by the lesser occipital nerve.
Needling
Transverse (subcutaneous) insertion, 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Tian (天), heaven; Chong (沖), in contact. Tian refers to the head. The name of the point relates to intense headache.
