Highly painful point.
Location (classical)
On the lateral (radial) aspect of the tip of the index finger, midway between the radial nail corner and the radial border of the digital pulp, approximately 0.1 cun from the corner of the nail.
How to find it (practical)
With the fingers slightly flexed and the index finger held in extension, locate the point at the intersection of the lines passing along the radial border and the base of the nail of the index finger.
Anatomy
Skin, subcutaneous tissue, dorsal digital nerves and veins, dorsal branches of the proper palmar digital arteries and nerves, distal interphalangeal joint.
Needling
Lancet puncture for bloodletting (indicated in acute pharyngitis). Perpendicular or proximally directed oblique insertion, 0.1–0.2 cun.
Etymology
Shang (商), one of the five musical notes, belongs to the Metal element; Yang (阳), yang (of Yin-Yang). The Large Intestine is paired with the Lung, which belongs to Metal in Five Element theory and is associated with the Shang note. Yang relates to the Yang Meridian.
