Precautions
The bone lies directly beneath; do not needle perpendicularly.
Location (classical)
5 cun above the prominence of the medial malleolus, immediately posterior to the medial crest of the tibia, in the depression between the medial crest of the tibia and the gastrocnemius muscle.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in dorsal decubitus, locate the point alongside the medial margin of the tibia, 5 cun above the apex of the medial malleolus.
Anatomy
Directly over the medial surface of the tibia. Innervated by the saphenous nerve.
Needling
0.5–1.0 cun vertically or obliquely in a posterior direction toward the fibula, or transversely (subcutaneously) along the tibia. Alternatively, perpendicular insertion 0.5–1.0 cun, or oblique insertion in a proximal direction 1–2 cun.
Etymology
Li (蠡), orifice; Gou (沟), depression. The point is located in a depression on the medial margin of the tibia, resembling an orifice.
