LU-11 Shaoshang — Lesser Shang
Depth
00.1–0.2 cun3.0
Prick-to-bleed
Precautions
Extremely painful point. Avoid puncturing the perionychium.
Location (classical)
On the radial/extensor aspect of the thumb, approximately 0.1 cun from the radial corner of the nail (at the junction of lines drawn along the radial border and the base of the nail).
How to find it (practical)
With the hand half-closed and the thumb extended, palm facing up, locate the point on the radial side of the thumb, 0.1 cun from the radial corner of the nail, at the intersection of the lines extending the radial border of the digit and the base of the nail (WHO 2008, §LU-11).
Anatomy
On the tip of the thumb, between the radial corner of the nail and the radial border of the digital pulp.
Needling
Perpendicular or proximally directed oblique insertion, 0.1–0.2 cun, or puncture for bloodletting.
Etymology
Shao (少), lesser, small; Shang (商), one of the five notes of the ancient pentatonic musical scale, corresponding to the Metal element and therefore to the Lung (Fei). Because it lies at the tip of the thumb — the most distal point along the Lung channel — this point is called "Lesser Shang," designating the Jing-Well (Wood) point of the Lung Meridian (Deadman, A Manual of Acupuncture, 2007, p. 86).
