Precautions
Avoid direct trauma to the median nerve.
Location (classical)
On the palmar aspect of the forearm, 3 cun proximal to the transverse crease of the wrist, between the tendons of the palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis muscles.
How to find it (practical)
With the arm extended and the palmar surface facing up, locate the point 3 cun above Da Ling (PC-7), or 3 cun above the first wrist crease.
Anatomy
Flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. The median nerve lies directly beneath the point.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.5 to 1 cun, or proximal oblique insertion 1 to 1.5 cun.
Etymology
Jian (間), space; Shi (使), minister of the monarch. The point lies in the space between the two tendons and has the function of transmitting Qi. It is so called because Xin Bao is the minister of the Xin (heart).
