Location (classical)
On the thenar eminence of the hand, in the depression between the midpoint of the shaft of the first metacarpal bone and the thenar muscles, along the border between the palmar and dorsal aspects of the hand.
How to find it (practical)
With the palm facing up, locate the point on the thenar eminence, at the midpoint of the first metacarpal bone, at the transition from palmar (light) skin to dorsal (dark) skin — the border of the thenar muscle (WHO 2008, §LU-10).
Anatomy
Abductor pollicis brevis muscle, opponens pollicis muscle. Innervated by the superficial branch of the radial nerve and the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve.

Perpendicular (vertical) insertion 0.5–1 cun.
Etymology
Yu (魚), fish; Ji (際), border, edge. The thenar muscle has the appearance of a fish belly ("yu fu"), and the point lies on the border of that fleshy ridge, exactly at the transition from palmar (light) skin to dorsal (dark) skin — hence the name "fish border" (Deadman, A Manual of Acupuncture, 2007, p. 84; Ling Shu, chapter 1).
