Location (classical)
On the scapula, in a depression over the infraspinatus muscle, one third of the distance from the midpoint of the spine of the scapula to the inferior angle of the scapula.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in the prone position, the point is located:
1. At the junction of the upper third with the middle third of the distance between the inferior border of the spine of the scapula and the inferior angle of the scapula.
2. On the line connecting the inferior border of the spine of the scapula with the inferior angle of the scapula, at the same level as the lower part of the fourth thoracic spinous process, forming a triangle with Jian Zhen (SI-9) and Nao Shu (SI-10).
Anatomy
Infraspinatus muscle. Innervated by the suprascapular nerve. Circumflex scapular artery.
Needling
Perpendicular or oblique insertion 0.5 to 1.5 cun.
Etymology
Tian (天), heaven, upper part; Zong (宗), center. Tian Zong represents an important point in the upper part of the body.
