Precautions
High risk of pneumothorax. Do not needle perpendicularly or deeply (the apex of the lung lies directly beneath). Caution: pneumothorax.
Location (classical)
On the back, 2 cun lateral to the inferior border of the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra (C7).
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in the prone position, first locate Da Zhui (GV-14). Locate the point Jian Zhong Shu (SI-15) 2 cun lateral to Da Zhui (GV-14), at the end of the transverse process of the first thoracic vertebra.
Anatomy
Trapezius and levator scapulae muscles. Innervated by the accessory nerve and dorsal scapular nerve. Transverse cervical artery.
Needling
0.5–1 cun perpendicularly or obliquely in a medial direction.
Etymology
Jian (肩), shoulder; Zhong (中), central or medial; Shu (俞), point. The point lies near the midline of the spine. [location] On the back, below the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra, 2 cun lateral to the posterior median line. (Fig. 9.23)
