Precautions
Avoid the external carotid artery and the external jugular vein.
Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the neck, posterior to the angle of the mandible, in a depression on the anterior border of the SCM muscle.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, locate the point at the same level as the angle of the mandible, on the anterior margin of the end of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, on the inferior border of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle.
Anatomy
Anterior border of the SCM, posterior belly of the digastric muscle. Innervated by the facial nerve, great auricular nerve, and accessory nerve. External carotid artery and external jugular vein nearby.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion directed toward the root of the tongue, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Tian (天), heaven, upper; Rong (容), appearance, face. The point lies on the head and treats tinnitus and hearing deficit.
