Precautions
Caution: the ulnar nerve lies directly beneath. Avoid direct puncture of the nerve (which causes a sharp electric sensation down to the little finger). Caution: the ulnar nerve is deep to this point.
Location (classical)
At the elbow, in the depression between the olecranon of the ulna and the medial epicondyle of the humerus. Locate with the elbow flexed.
How to find it (practical)
With the elbow slightly flexed, locate the point at the olecranon, at the level of the transverse crease of the cubital fossa and of the medial epicondyle (Fig. 9.22). This point produces the sensation of a shock that radiates to the little finger when the region around it is percussed.
Anatomy
In the ulnar groove. The ulnar nerve passes directly through this space. Innervated by the medial cutaneous nerve of the forearm.
Needling
Distal or proximal oblique insertion 0.5 to 1 cun; or perpendicular insertion 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
Etymology
Xiao (小), small; Hai (海), sea. Xiao refers to the Xiao Chang (Small Intestine) Meridian, and this is its He (Sea) point. The arrival of Qi and Xue (Blood) at this point is like river water flowing into the sea.
