Location (classical)
With the knee flexed, 2 cun proximal to the medial cranial pole (upper border) of the patella, over the vastus medialis muscle, in a depression that is often clearly palpable.
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the knees flexed, locate the point 2 cun above the superomedial border of the patella, exactly at the center of the prominence of the vastus medialis muscle. Seated with the knees flexed, the physician places the center of the right palm on the patient's left patella; the point lies at the tip of the thumb.
Anatomy
Vastus medialis muscle. Innervated by anterior cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular or oblique insertion, 1.0–1.5 cun.
Etymology
Xue (血), blood; Hai (海), sea. The point is indicated in hematologic disorders.
