Precautions
Deep insertion can penetrate the peritoneal cavity. Caution: in lean patients, deep needling can penetrate the peritoneal cavity; deep needling at this point can penetrate a substantially enlarged spleen or liver.
Location (classical)
On the abdomen, in the depression at the lateral border of the rectus abdominis muscle, 4 cun lateral to the center of the umbilicus.
How to find it (practical)
Supine, locate the point 4 cun lateral to the anterior midline, at the level of Shen Que (CV-8).
Anatomy
External and internal oblique muscles, transversus abdominis. Innervated by the 10th intercostal nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.5 to 1 cun.
Etymology
Da (大), great; Heng (横), horizontal. This point lies on the abdomen, at the level of the umbilicus.
