Precautions
Avoid the carotid artery and the jugular veins.
Location (classical)
On the anterior border of the SCM muscle, at the midpoint of a line connecting ST-9 and ST-11.
How to find it (practical)
Seated, with the head erect, locate the point inferior to Ren Ying (ST-9), on the anterior aspect of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, at the level of the inferior margin of the cricoid cartilage, at the midpoint of a line connecting Ren Ying (ST-9) and Qi She (ST-11).
Anatomy
Platysma, SCM muscle. Innervated by the transverse cervical nerve.
Needling
Oblique medially-directed insertion 0.5–1.0 cun, angled away from the carotid artery.
Etymology
Shui (水), water; Tu (突), prominence, projection. The point lies on the neck, near the esophagus. It treats dysphagia and asthma.
