Precautions
Deep insertion carries a risk of puncturing the lung (causing pneumothorax) or injuring the great cervical vessels.
Location (classical)
At the base of the neck, directly below ST-9, at the superior border of the clavicle, in the depression between the sternal and clavicular heads of the SCM muscle.
How to find it (practical)
Seated, with the head erect, locate the point immediately inferior to Ren Ying (ST-9), at the upper margin of the proximal end of the clavicle, 1.5 cun lateral to Tian Tu (CV-22).
Anatomy
Between the heads of the SCM. The apex of the lung, the common carotid artery, and the internal jugular vein lie deep.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Qi (气), air; She (舍), abode. Qi refers to the vital energy of Fei (Lung) and Wei (Stomach).
