Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the head, directly at the level of the apex of the ear when it is folded forward.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, folding the ear forward, locate the point on the hairline, immediately above the ear. This area is felt when opening or closing the mouth.
Anatomy
The branches of the auriculotemporal nerve containing fibers from the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve innervate the skin.
Needling
Transverse insertion 0.5–1.5 cun; inserted in the subcutaneous layers near the bone of the skull, directed toward the disorder. Or horizontal insertion of 0.3 to 0.5 cun.
Etymology
Jiao (角), angle; Sun (孫), small vessel (at the apex of the ear). The point lies in the temporal region, corresponding to the apex of the ear, where the network of meridians is distributed.
