Precautions
HIGH-RISK VASCULAR AREA. Deep insertion risks puncturing the popliteal artery or vein. Do not use aggressive lift-and-thrust technique. Avoid injury to the tibial nerve.
Location (classical)
At the midpoint of the popliteal crease, between the tendons of the biceps femoris and semitendinosus.
How to find it (practical)
With the patient prone or in lateral decubitus, locate the point at the center of the popliteal fossa, between the tendons of the biceps femoris and semitendinosus muscles.
Anatomy
Popliteal fascia. Innervated by the posterior femoral cutaneous nerve and the tibial nerve. The popliteal artery and vein lie deep to the point.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.5–1.0 cun; or prick to bleed in acute conditions.
Etymology
Wei (委), bend of the knee; Zhong (中), center. The point sits at the center of the popliteal fossa.
