Precautions
HIGH RISK. Deep needling directed medially and superiorly can enter the foramen magnum and penetrate the spinal cord or medulla oblongata.
Location (classical)
Suboccipital region, in the depression between the superior attachments of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and trapezius muscles, at the level of GV-16.
How to find it (practical)
With the patient seated or prone, locate the point in the inferior depression of the occipital bone, between the superior attachments of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
Anatomy
Splenius capitis, rectus capitis posterior major and minor. Nerve supply: lesser occipital nerve and greater occipital nerve. The occipital artery and vertebral artery lie deep to this point.
Needling
Oblique insertion directed toward the tip of the nose or the contralateral orbit, 0.8–1.2 cun.
Etymology
Feng (风): pathogenic wind; Chi (池): pool or depression. This is a key point for eliminating pathogenic wind.
