Precautions
Avoid deep medial insertion into the joint capsule without specific indication — there is risk of penetrating the glenohumeral joint with vertically directed needling.
Location (classical)
In the depression anterior and inferior to the acromion. With the arm abducted to 90°, two depressions appear at the anterior and posterior borders of the acromion; LI-15 is located in the anterior depression.
How to find it (practical)
1. With the arm abducted, locate the point in the anterior depression of the shoulder joint.
2. With the shoulder relaxed, locate the point 2 cun directly below the acromial extremity of the clavicle, on the Large Intestine Meridian, Hand Yang Ming. (Fig. 9.5)
Anatomy
Anterior and middle fibers of the deltoid muscle, supraspinatus tendon. Innervated by the lateral supraclavicular nerve and the axillary nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion (with the arm abducted) 1.0–1.5 cun, or downward oblique insertion (with the arm at rest) 0.8–1.5 cun.
Etymology
Jian (肩), shoulder; Yu (髃), corner, angle. The point lies at the corner of the shoulder.
