Location (classical)
On the radial aspect of the hand, between the first and second metacarpal bones, closer to the second metacarpal and approximately at its midpoint — corresponds to the apex of the muscular bulge when the thumb and index finger are brought together.
How to find it (practical)
1. With the thumb in abduction, place the crease of the distal interphalangeal joint of the contralateral thumb pressing the area between the thumb and index finger of the first hand. Locate the point where the tip of the thumb reaches.
2. With the thumb in abduction, locate the point at the apex of the muscles on the dorsum of the hand, between the thumb and index finger.
3. With the thumb in abduction, locate the point at the center of the line connecting the midpoints of the first and second metacarpal bones.
Anatomy
First dorsal interosseous muscle, adductor pollicis muscle. Innervated by the superficial branch of the radial nerve and the palmar digital branch of the median nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
He (合), joining; Gu (谷), valley. This point lies between the first and second metacarpal bones. The site is a depression resembling a valley.
