Precautions
Deep perpendicular insertion carries a risk of pneumothorax. Caution: perpendicular insertion, especially in lean patients, carries substantial risk of inducing pneumothorax.
Location (classical)
In the tender depression superior to the medial end of the spine of the scapula, midway between Naoshu SI-10 and the spinous process of T2.
How to find it (practical)
Seated, with the upper limb relaxed, locate it at the midpoint of the line connecting Nao Shu (SI-10) and the spinous process of the second thoracic vertebra.
Anatomy
Trapezius and supraspinatus muscles. Innervated by the suprascapular nerve and accessory nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular or oblique insertion, 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Qu (曲), curved; Yuan (垣), wall. The point lies on the spine of the scapula, which resembles a curved wall.
