Precautions
CONTRAINDICATED IN PREGNANCY (strongly induces labor). Caution: contraindicated in pregnancy (especially in the early and late stages of gestation).
Location (classical)
On the medial aspect of the leg, 3 cun above the most prominent point of the medial malleolus, in a depression near the posterior border of the medial crest of the tibia.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or supine, locate the point on the posterior margin of the tibia, 3 cun above the apex of the medial malleolus.
Anatomy
Flexor digitorum longus, soleus, and tibialis posterior muscles. Innervated by the saphenous nerve and the tibial nerve. The posterior tibial artery and vein run deep.
Needling
Perpendicular or proximally directed oblique insertion, 1 to 2 cun.
Etymology
San Yin (三阴), three Yin meridians; Jiao (交), crossing. This is the intersection point of the Spleen-Pancreas Meridian, Tai Yin of the Foot, the Liver Meridian, Jue Yin of the Foot, and the Kidney Meridian, Shao Yin of the Foot.
