Precautions
Avoid the anterior tibial artery when needling deeply
Location (classical)
On the anterior surface of the leg, 3 cun below ST-35, one finger-breadth (middle finger) lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia
How to find it (practical)
1. With the patient seated and the knee flexed, locate the point 3 cun directly below the lateral foramen of the knee, 1 cun lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia. 2. With the patient seated and the knee flexed, locate the point 1 cun below the inferior margin of the tibial tuberosity and 1 cun lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia. 3. With the patient seated and the knee flexed, have the patient place their own palm over the patella so that the index finger touches the anterior crest of the tibia. Zu San Li (ST-36) lies at the level of the tip of the middle finger.
Anatomy
Tibialis anterior muscle. Innervated by the deep fibular nerve. The anterior tibial artery and vein lie deep to this point

Perpendicular insertion, 1.0–1.5 cun
Etymology
Zu (足), lower limb; San (三), three; Li (里), a unit of distance (equivalent to approximately 500 meters today). The point is located 3 cun below the knee.
