Precautions
Avoid the superficial temporal artery, which is palpable at this location.
Location (classical)
On the lateral aspect of the head, at the level of the root of the auricle, posterior to the superficial temporal artery.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, locate the point anterosuperior to Er Men (TE-21), at the same level as the root of the ear, at the location where the pulsation of the artery can be felt, on the posterior border of the hairline, at the temple.
Anatomy
Temporalis muscle. Innervated by the auriculotemporal nerve and the temporal branches of the facial nerve.
Needling
Transverse (subcutaneous) insertion, 0.1–0.3 cun.
Etymology
Er (耳), ear; He (和), harmony; Liao (髎), foramen. The point lies in the depression in front of the tragus, used to improve hearing.
