Highly vascular area; prone to bruising.
Location (classical)
On the face, in the depression on the lateral aspect of the orbit, approximately 0.5 cun lateral to the outer canthus of the eye.
How to find it (practical)
Seated, with the head at rest and the eyes closed, locate the point 0.5 cun lateral to the lateral margin of the orbit, in the depression beside the lateral commissure of the eyelid.
Anatomy
Orbicularis oculi muscle. Innervated by the zygomaticofacial nerve (trigeminal) and the facial nerve.
Needling
Transverse (subcutaneous) insertion directed posteriorly or toward neighboring points (e.g., Taiyang), 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Tong Zi (瞳子), pupil; Liao (髎), foramen. The point is located in the depression beside the lateral commissure of the eyelid, at the level of the pupil.
