Location (classical)
With the teeth clenched, at the highest prominence of the masseter muscle, approximately one finger-breadth anterior and superior to the angle of the mandible.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, locate the point 0.4 cun from the angle of the mandible. With the teeth clenched, the masseter muscle becomes prominent.
Anatomy
Masseter muscle. Innervated by the masseteric nerve (a branch of the trigeminal) and the facial nerve.
Needling
Insert with the patient's mouth closed. Perpendicular insertion 0.3–0.5 cun, or transverse insertion 1.0–1.5 cun directed toward ST-4, SI-18, or SI-19.
Etymology
Jia (頰), cheek region; Che (車), vehicle. Che refers to the mandible. The point lies in the cheek region near the angle of the mandible.
