Precautions
Deep insertion may cause an electric-shock sensation owing to the facial nerve.
Location (classical)
Posterior to the earlobe, in the depression between the mastoid process and the angle of the mandible.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or in lateral decubitus, with the earlobe folded slightly inward, the point is located anterior to the mastoid process.
Anatomy
The external jugular vein, the great auricular nerve, the trunk of the facial nerve (located more deeply at its emergence from the stylomastoid foramen), and the posterior auricular artery.
Needling
Insert the needle 0.5 to 1 cun toward the contralateral eyeball (to treat facial paralysis).
Etymology
Yi (翳), verb meaning to shelter, hide, protect; Feng (風), pathogenic wind. The point lies behind the earlobe in a location sheltered from pathogenic wind.
