Precautions
Avoid the facial artery and vein.
Location (classical)
Directly below the pupil, at the level of the inferior border of the ala of the nose, on the lateral side of the nasolabial groove.
How to find it (practical)
Seated or supine, with the patient looking straight ahead, locate the point at the intersection of the vertical line through the pupil and the horizontal line through the inferior border of the ala of the nose.
Anatomy
Levator labii superioris muscle. Innervated by branches of the facial nerve and the infraorbital nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular or oblique insertion 0.3–0.5 cun. Alternatively, transverse insertion toward ST-4 or SI-18 for facial palsy.
Etymology
Ju (巨), huge; Liao (髎), foramen. The point lies in a foramen, at the junction of the maxilla and the zygomatic bone.
