Location (classical)
Seated or in dorsal or lateral recumbency. Located in the sternocleidomastoid region (the cervical region overlying the sternocleidomastoid muscle), on the transverse plane that passes through the midpoint of the posterior third of this muscle.
Anatomy
Skin, subcutaneous tissue, platysma muscle, superficial layer of the cervical fascia, sternocleidomastoid muscle. Superficial layer: transverse cervical nerve, cervical branch of the facial nerve. Deep layer: internal jugular vein, carotid sinus, branches or tributaries of the superior thyroid artery and vein, branches of the hypoglossal nerve, of the ansa cervicalis, of the accessory nerve (which innervates the sternocleidomastoid muscle), and of the vagus nerve.
