Deep insertion may penetrate the peritoneal cavity.
Location (classical)
In the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 2 cun superior to the umbilicus.
How to find it (practical)
In supine decubitus, locate the point 1 cun above Shui Fen (CV-9), or 2 cun above the center of the umbilicus.
Anatomy
Linea alba. Innervated by the eighth intercostal nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.5–1.5 cun.
Etymology
Xia (下), lower; Wan (脘), stomach. The point is located in the region corresponding to the lower part of the stomach.
