Deep insertion may penetrate the peritoneal cavity.
Location (classical)
In the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 1 cun superior to the umbilicus.
How to find it (practical)
In supine decubitus, locate the point 1 cun above Shen Que (CV-8).
Anatomy
Linea alba. Innervated by the eighth and ninth intercostal nerves.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Shui (水), water and food; Fen (分), separation. The point is located 1 cun above the umbilicus, corresponding to the small intestine, where water and food are separated into pure and impure parts.
