Precautions
Deep insertion may penetrate the peritoneal cavity or perforate an enlarged liver.
Location (classical)
In the upper abdomen, on the anterior midline, 5 cun superior to the umbilicus.
How to find it (practical)
In supine decubitus, locate the point 1 cun above Zhong Wan (CV-12), or 5 cun above the center of the umbilicus.
Anatomy
Linea alba. Innervated by the seventh intercostal nerve.
Needling
Perpendicular insertion, 0.5–1.5 cun.
Etymology
Shang (上), upper; Wan (脘), cavity. The point is located in the region corresponding to the stomach.
