Location (classical)
On the anterior midline, over the sternum, at the level of the fourth intercostal space (at the midpoint between the nipples in men).
How to find it (practical)
In supine decubitus, locate the point at the intersection between the sternal midline and the intermammillary line in men. In women, the intersection between the sternal midline and the line at the level of the fourth intercostal space is considered.
Anatomy
Body of the sternum. Innervated by the fourth intercostal nerve.
Needling
Transverse (subcutaneous) insertion directed superiorly or inferiorly, 0.3–0.5 cun.
Etymology
Tan (膻), stage; Zhong (中), center. The point is located at the center of the chest as if it were a stage.
