Precautions
Aseptic technique is essential, as the needle penetrates the epidural space of the sacral canal.
Location (classical)
On the sacrum, on the posterior midline, in the center of the sacral hiatus.
How to find it (practical)
In prone or lateral decubitus, locate the sacral prominence above the coccyx. Then locate the point at the intersection of the posterior midline with the horizontal line passing through the two sacral prominences.
Anatomy
Sacrococcygeal ligament. The needle penetrates the sacral canal. Innervated by branches of the coccygeal and sacral nerves.
Needling
Oblique insertion directed superiorly into the sacral canal, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Su Wen: "The point is located in the sacral hiatus (GV-2)."
