Deep insertion may reach the spinal canal.
Location (classical)
On the posterior midline, in the depression directly below the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebra (C7). (C7 is typically the most prominent vertebra with the neck flexed.)
How to find it (practical)
Seated with the back flexed or in prone decubitus, locate the point below the seventh cervical vertebra, at the largest prominence in the cervical region.
Anatomy
Supraspinous and interspinous ligaments, trapezius. Innervated by the dorsal branches of the eighth cervical nerve.
Needling
Oblique insertion directed superiorly, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Da (大), great; Zhui (椎), vertebra. The point is located below the prominence of the seventh cervical vertebra, the largest of the vertebrae.
