Deep insertion may reach the spinal canal.
Location (classical)
On the back, on the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of the tenth thoracic vertebra (T10). At the same level as BL-19 (Gallbladder Shu).
How to find it (practical)
Seated upright or in prone decubitus, locate the point in the depression between the spinous processes of the tenth and eleventh thoracic vertebrae.
Anatomy
Supraspinous and interspinous ligaments.
Needling
Oblique insertion directed superiorly, 0.5–1.0 cun.
Etymology
Zhong (中), middle; Shu (樞), pivot. The point is located at the center of the vertebral column, like a pivot.
